haven is almost here!

02.01.10 ~ Updates, Press & Publication ~ posted by Millie

Every year I work closely with Bald Head Island to photograph a couple of stories for Haven Magazine. It's a first class publication and I'm always excited to be a part of it. This year I'll have two stories featured! One is a mother & daughter get away on the island. Here you'll see a few of my favorite images of the young girls from that story. We spent a lot of time by the pool and in the ocean. Some of these will make the final cut and wind up in print and some might not so I figured I would give all of my faithful blog readers a sneak peek of my favorites.

We also have another story in Haven this year and it's all about weddings! They'll be highlighting three different weddings that took place on the Island and I photographed all three! I'm going to make you wait until I see it in print to post a sneak peek of that article here. I can't wait to flip through the publication for myself!

01.30.10 ~ Updates, Weddings ~ posted by Millie

If you missed my post from earlier this week "oranges + ladders" than click here to check it out before reading this one. That shoot correlates with this post so you'll want to see it first!

The Balcony On Dock has their Open House in January and it was a fantastic event. Jennifer from Salt Harbor designed the room as one full event. Nicki made an amazing cake to match and the Balcony's food even matched the theme! Our photos were also used throughout the event and they tied into the decor nicely!

The guests were serenaded by violinist Maura Kropke along with DJ Jason Tatum from Active Entertainment DJ who played some nice relaxing tunes throughout the day!

Nicki's cupcakes for sampling at the Open House! YUM!!!

The furniture is provided by Harborside Event Rentals, they have such lovely piece for rent. A great addition to any wedding or party!

The image hanging between the chairs (right) was the biggest print we had made for the Open House and it was just perfectly dreamy for the space. LOVED it!

Thanks to Jill at the Balcony and the entire team that pitched in to make this Open House the best ever!

01.25.10 ~ Updates, Engagement ~ posted by Millie, Brent & Amanda

This session was a team effort for the staff here at MHP and Salt Harbor Designs. When Jennifer approached me about helping out with the Balcony's Open House she showed me a couple of story boards. Her plan was to theme the entire Open House to tie into the inspiration board including a photo shoot.

My job was to take a couple out and make the shoot match the board, so the images could be used throughout the Open House. We pre-planned everything from the props to the wardrobe in advance and I am super happy with the way it all turned out... what a blast to shoot!

We chose the coldest day of the year, January 2nd to do the shoot. Little did we know of the frigid weather which would await us. We had made the plans for Katy to be wearing a skirt and short sleeve shirt! Brrrrr! Katy Ryan were such champs to spend their Saturday in the freezing cold juggling oranges, climbing trees and snuggling just to keep warm!

Love the headpiece you see on Katy? You can buy it here!. A HUGE thanks to Lindsey for designing just the right piece and so last minute too! Lots of love to Amanda & Brent for coming along and helping out too! Brent did some video which we might get around to editing one of these days and Amanda helped shoot a bit.

A big hug to Orton Gardens for letting us use their property... amazing as always! Also, kisses to the wonderful team at NSalo for a knock out job... Melissa did Katy's hair and Erica polished off the look flawlessly with the makeup. Bravo ladies, bravo!

I'll post the Open House images tomorrow so you can see how it all tied together. Stay tuned! This first image is the inspiration board the shoot was themed after!

snapshots volume two

01.18.10 ~ Updates ~ posted by Millie, Brent & Amanda

You might remember a previous post I did last last January where I discussed a project I worked on with Port City Community Church. Well Snapshots Volume Two released recently and I wanted to share the finished product with everyone here. Thanks to Brent for grabbing these images for me to post!

Chris Davis, a photographer who also attends PC3, was the other photographer involved in the shoot. We both took turns grabbing different details and views of the cameras so some of the shots below are his and others are mine. This project was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see Volumes Three and Four... hopefully this year! Each cover will have a different vintage camera... the one pictured below is one in my own personal collection!

If you go to Port City be sure to stop in the bookstore and pick up your own copy of the CD... it's great!

The album art was done by (our own) Brent Holloman and Evan Vetter (PC3's e-media director). Great job everyone... a true team effort!

my thoughts on this week [from the editor's desk]

01.15.10 ~ Updates, Life ~ posted by Millie, Brent & Amanda, Rachel, Rebecca

Well, 2010 has certainly arrived.

If you follow my twitter, you've most likely heard my most recent, and fairly blunt, thoughts on the many happenings 2010 has already brought along...

Most of you are familiar with my obsessive love for polaroids and toy cameras, so you can imagine my disappointment last year when we all waved goodbye to our favorite shake-it photographs.

Luckily, The Impossible Project launched towards the end of last year in efforts to re-invent and re-start production of film for vintage Polaroid cameras...but I'm not sure any of us were expecting to see Lady Gaga selling us our favorite instant film.

I can't lie and say that I like anything by Lady Gaga, but I must give her props for originality in areas such as:

- completely eliminating the use of pants in everyday wardrobe (even in Winter)
- re-inventing the one piece in an infinite amount of unfortunate ways such as pleather, see-through, etc. (due to lack of pants)
- deciding sunglasses are more necessary than pants (and wearing them regardless of sunlight being anywhere in sight)
- and of course, her infamous "hair art" such as hair hats, hair manes, and even hair umbrellas (I can't prove the last one, but I don't doubt it)

I do believe we were all equally shocked this week when hearing of Jay Leno potentially kicking Conan O'Brien out of his time slot on NBC. I don't watch much television at all, but I think the easiest way to sum all of this up is simply: Conan>Jay.

We may have lost the battle, Conan, but in the end you made us you laugh 100 times more.

On a less disappointing note, I have been giving Vampire Weekend's new album, CONTRA, a few spins. It's a fun new album for 2010, and has all of the familiar indie-pop bliss we loved from their first one. They do a little more adventuring on this album, and while each track is different than the one before it, they somehow manage to just feel right together.

I'm still not sure why people talked about this album like it was going to alter our universe, but at the end of the day, whether you love them or hate them, I promise you'll have these tunes stuck in your head.

Last, but MOST important, our world was absolutely turned upside down when hearing of the disaster earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday of this week. The exact number of deaths and injuries was uncertain in the midst of wreckage, but the international Red Cross stated a third of the country's 9 million people may need emergency aid.

While rumors of the United Parcel Service shipping relief items, and airlines flying doctors to Haiti for free were sadly proven untrue, we can all still do our own part to help aid in this ongoing disaster. There are currently numerous ways to help, so let's all try and give to Haiti in the midst of such devastation. All of our efforts together CAN make a difference.

Just today MHP made our donation to Thirst Relief International in honor of the "Haiti Rebuild Project". We urge you to find a charity and do the same or, head over to Thirst Relief and make your own donation!

We encourage you to have a hand in the relief efforts for Haiti!

Here's to 2010- the moments that will keep us laughing until it hurts, the tragedies that will bring us to our knees, the love that will keep us alive, and the hope that we will all not just live, but thrive.
